This beta-crazy world we now live in is generally a fantastic, pro-consumer environment (outside of nonsense like pre-ordering other games to get beta access, or console timed-exclusive betas as marketing points).īut, I think for certain genres of games, we might see this practice scaled back a bit. "Try before you buy” is a great philosophy in gaming, especially when $60 is a pretty steep commitment for many players. This is, of course, very good for the player. The common thread here is that I think this “beta disinterest” trend disproportionately affects multiplayer-only games that fans end up thinking are light on content.

And so far I’ve racked up dozens of hours in the Overwatch beta, and I still cannot wait to pick it up on day one for full price. The Destiny beta was arguably the biggest game release of the summer of last year, and exemplified the “you just have to play it” appeal of the game. I got my fill of Black Ops 3 multiplayer during the beta, but I still wanted to play the full game at release for campaign and zombies. But after again, an early test, many players may have already had their fill, and Siege’s beta server issues may have scared them off, given that the real launch was only a few days away.

Lately, I’ve also heard quite a lot of griping about the Rainbow Six: Siege beta, where players are upset the franchise is now little more than a name, ditching all story and lore from the past Rainbow Six games, and is yet another multiplayer shooter trying to wrestle $60 out of their pockets (albeit one with free DLC). The beta debuted with Walker Assault, far and away the game's best mode, and the full game didn't add on much more than that, as players quickly realized during the EA Access early test.

The beta weekend combined with the early 10 hour full-game test was all that many players actually needed to play to decide the game was too light on content to be worthwhile, or too generic and casual to please them as long-time fans of the series. I saw this happen a lot with the Star Wars: Battlefront early previews as well.
